Hey Herbert!!

Recently I was reading about how the Jain concept of certain karmic laws differ from other Indian systems. They believe karma is an actual subatomic energetic substance, which "clings" to the continuum of subtle mind that goes from birth to birth. I think Buddhists and Hindus believe karma to be actual configuration of the mind-stuff that's subtler than matter, but still in the energetic realm of existence.

And the imprints - or substance - on the subtle mind during the point of birth is what facilitates a manifestation as a plant, animal, or what have you. Otherwise, we're just luminous awareness, primordial consciousness, the "soul," or whatever label you want to put on it - keeping in mind that labels are themselves akin to the karmic imprints; ultimately an obscuration at the final stage.

I suppose the only way to really know is refine your perception to the same level as the yogis and sages of the past, and find the answer for yourself!
