I would suggest looking up the concept of the "retired empath." It's basically about reading others' energy, and not eating it involuntarily. I'm still working on it as a skill, though, and I find that learning very deeply about cultures that actively trained empathy (ex. Tonglen meditations in Tibet) is super helpful. I think it's all about keeping context in mind, and training your energy-system to maintain its sovereignty.
