Was Buddhism a monastic religion though? The Sangha is fourfold, so it means half of it are laymen and laywomen. The monastics also were meant to interact with the householders every day while on alms rounds. Perhaps you're caught up in your dualities of householder vs. monk, which aren't so clear-cut as you think they are.
